Extension unit

Since I’ve started, there are times that my pump malfunction because it couldn’t transport water to the top tier.

Because of this tiny little sieve, I’ve to tear down the tiers to wash it.

After much considerations, I’ve asked for an extension unit, without the covers.

After a few weekends, the bottom tier consists of 37 additional sites

The whole lifecycle took me months.

(1) start seeds in soil

(2) transfer to nursery hydroponically soak in weak solution

(3) transfer to kindergarten where bigger totes are used

(4) transfer to main station primary school

(5) harvest

August 24th Tiny tim experiment

I’ve not had splashing success on tomatoes planting since a long time. This time round, I’ve started a few tiny Tom seeds. It’s a determined cherry variety and can grow.

8/24/2021 Tiny Tom planted typically grow to be about 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) tall

I’ve also prepared a tote for it to grow in the open, those were dead now. For those which have survived, are those start from trays.

Harvesting

Taiwan white Bayam grows pretty fast. And some of my kale 🥬 grown to have bigger leaves. So I harvested a bunch of them for lunch.

Kale has bitter tastes and folks massage them to reduce the bitterness taste. “ Glucosinolates are basically a chemical compound containing sulfur and nitrogen. It’s easy to relate this compound to the cruciferous veggie family, as most of these vegetables have a sulfur smell which is also responsible for the bitter taste you get when you eat broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts”https://nutritionstripped.com/massaged-kale-salad/

Taiwan white Bayam aka never fading flower

Bayam is also known as Chinese Spinach and belongs to the genus Amaranthus. In Mandarin, it’s known as 白骨苋菜

Description: A variation of the spinach/amaranth family. It has tender stems and suitable for stir fry and soups.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil.

Germination time: 4-10 days.

Harvest time: 45-60 days.

Spacing: Min 7-10 cm apart.

Water: Regular watering.

Fertiliser: High nitrogen.

Challenges / Tips: Pluck individual leaves when they are 15cm-30cm tall. Look out for aphids.

Suitable for hydroponics. EC level 1800 μS/cm (young), 2300 μS/cm (mature)

I didn’t realise it was way to grow in the Singapore hot weather. Its quite cool watching them grow up faster than my kale. That’s about it

Prepare the seeds

Currently, I sow them in rows of trays where I water them gently in the morning

Next, I transplant the seedlings to hydroponic nutrients solution and used a method call kratky to let them starte with a weak EC solution.

564us/cm 28.4C 258ppm Solution X 17-9-29, calcium 12, magnesium 3
This is how the veggies look on Jul 8th right after transplanting from weak to strong EC solution. Let’s wait to see how different it look after a few days. 1596 um/cm 28.4C 809ppm

When they are big enough, I moved them to a spacious box of higher EC level.

How tall are they?

I’ve added fertilizers 8-8-8 for one week and then bone meal for the next. It’s a bit too much as the instruction do caution me to add once every two to three weeks.

Brand Z 8-8-8 Directions of Use: Sprinkle approximately 1 teaspoon of fertilizer onto the soil of small potted plants (1-2 tablespoons for large pots, 2-4 tablespoons for trees) once every 2-3 weeks, water immediately after to start absorption by the plants.

Contains:
Nitrogen (N) – 8%
Phosphorous (P) – 8%
Potassium (K) – 8%
Magnesium (MgO) – 2%
Humate – 10%

As for the hydrophonic solutions, I’ve added highest strength as per instruction. Still, it stays around 1084 in/cm 500 ppm for Solution Y.
